Life is a Dream collage

This is my latest collage its made up of 45 separate pieces cut from at least 25 different books and magazines and measures 12" X 22".  The collage is mounted on foam core and I'm still working on the details, coming in with water colors and a 3 b graphite pencil. I think to title it Life is a Dream.

LA PUNTA DE LOS MUERTOS (Dead Mans point)

Reworking a collage adding the planets into the mix as well as highlighting the surfer on the wave!
I titled it La Punta De Los Muertos or Dead Mans Point

Guest Speaker at Art Class Huntington Beach High School

I was stoked to be asked by Matt Harward,  Art Teacher at Huntington Beach High School, to speak to a few of his art classes about my artwork and my approach in creating the assemblages that I build. Matts classrooms are chock full of materials, artwork, books, tools and computers to assist the art students in the creative process.  Kinda looks like the area I work at home so I told the kids that thier classroom is an excellent space to create and is exactly what an artists workspace looks like!  It appears to me that matt strives to create an environment of creativity and learning that enables one to feel comfortable in expressing themselves.
I brought in to class a few of my own assemblages to show as examples as well as tools I use and adhesives to assist in putting the pieces together. I also brought box of common objects that I use in creating assemblage just to give the students an idea of what one artist uses to create a visual language.  I discussed my working method, how I get ideas to make art,  objects I use and how I use them and how I put it all together, the nuts and bolts of constructing an assemblage. I was really impressed with some of students attitudes and questions about assemblage and about my own work.
Thanks for asking me to hang out and talk art matt!

Guardian of the Threshold

I took a bit of time off from creating things, went to the swap meets stocking up on materials for future artworks and compiling images for upcoming use. This is my first artwork for the year and i'm stoked on the result. I titled the artwork: Guardian of the Threshold, refering to our worlds ideas of duality and the resulting illusions caused by our concepts of duality and our desire to achieve a balance in this world between positive and negative, light and dark, male and female, good and evil.
I like using the grid as a template and references to maps with lines, dots, alphabetic and numeric codes as a loose allusion to an inner geography.
I'm using this handmade paper  29" X 20" that is translucent and has a oily mottled texture to it. The paper enabled me to layer imagery from collage, my drawings watercolor, gesso and gold leaf and resulted in some neat effects.  I used graphite pencils, watercolors, gold leaf and collage in this piece. I'm still trying to decide if its completed or not.
