Raku

Thanks tatum  for taking the photos of me in the process!

Materials:
A wheel thrown bisqued bowl made with Long Beach clay
Metallic black raku glaze
Lava Flow raku glaze
One Small metal can filled with bark from a birch tree and about three pages of the local newspaper. 
And a kiln fired to about 1600 degrees.
So happy with the results, the surface of the bowl has flashes of green and gold areas of black metallic and copper. 
A tortured surface going from the hot kiln to the cooling water in about 4 to 5 minutes! 
It's a relatively simple and spontaneous, immediate process that produces some beautiful results.
Survived the cycle of earth, fire, air and water!

New bowls and small teapots out of the high fire kiln

A bunch of new bowls and teapots out of the high fire kiln the other day. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. I had a few duds and had the lids of two tea pots fused onto the body! I tried to remove the lids but to no avail. Had to break one of the lids and saved the teapot body and i'll make a lid later. 

Most of these small bowls i'm using Black mountain clay and glazing with tenmoku, carbon trap shino and . I really enjoy the subtle changes in color and distressed look to these bowls.

      This small teapot has an iron oxide wash on the lower part of the form and the top is glazed with carbon trap shino and then a white glaze in the interior of the teapot.

This small teapot  has iron oxide wash and left raw on the top half with a white glaze dipped halfway  and on the inside of the pot. I like how the white glaze and iron oxide worked together to produce that spotted grey distressed look.

I've been busy throwing bowls and making teapots on the wheel with Black Mountain clay and Long Beach clay and Glazes. so pleased with these new bowls!
